Is New York pizza the best?
It’s a good question: is New York pizza better than pizza you’re going to find anywhere else? Some people say it is; others say you can get pretty good pizza just about anywhere, so what’s the big deal?
If, like me, you’re a pizza fanatic, you may be wondering if you’re missing out on something in life by not having eaten the best pizza in the world.
As a self-proclaimed pizza enthusiast, I’m here to answer this question for you once and for all. Pay attention. You may even want to take some notes.
So is it the best or not?
Here’s the thing: there are a lot of factors that go into making “the best pizza in the world” and they’re going to be different for everyone. For some people, a thick crust is where it’s at. For others, a thin crust hits the spot. Some pizza-eaters place a high value on what the sauce tastes like; others are more concerned about the cheesiness factor.
When it comes down to it, the best pizza in the world is subjective – much like a soul mate. We could debate all day but we’re never going to hit on a definition of “the best pizza ever” that everyone in the world can agree on.
So what about New York pizza?
Just answer the question!
OK, fine. If you want a straight up answer: no.
New York pizza is pretty dang good. But in my experience, it’s not significantly better than pizza in other U.S. cities.
New York City certainly has a lot of options when it comes to pizza, so obviously there’s bound to be some pretty good pizza restaurants. And there are. But there are also some pretty good pizza places in Chicago, Los Angeles, and even Seattle, for that matter.
If you’re in New York, should you grab some pizza? Definitely. And with a little research, you can hit up some pretty great pizza destinations: like Joe’s Pizza and Lombardi’s. You can even get a slice of pizza for 99 cents (though obviously it’s not going to be the best you’ve ever tasted).
But if you’re feeling deprived because you haven’t sampled the best of New York City pizza – don’t.
Now that we’ve settled this age-old debate, let’s celebrate our accomplishment by grabbing some pizza!
