Richard Branson’s Bike Crash Brings Him Near Death
Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, got more than what he bargained for on a casual bike ride in the Caribbean. The 66-year old business magnate was involved in a high-speed crash that destroyed his bike and left his face looking like he just came back from his first night at Fight Club (don’t talk about it). The incident happened as Branson was going downhill. It had just become dark, and the speeding Branson didn’t notice a speed bump in the middle of the road. He was ejected from the bike, which continued with some momentum off the side of a cliff. The bike was found later, albeit in much worse condition than the businessman. But what caused it? Was he drunk? Was he in a rush? No. Richard Branson’s bike crash was largely the result of staying fit.
Still Fit at 66
Branson was training for his company’s annual endurance biking event in Europe. At 66 years old, Branson remains committed to staying fit and living a healthy lifestyle. Though he is known to party, he does not smoke and eats a balanced diet. With this diet, he stays fit, spending hours swimming, running, or playing sports. But he always takes precautions. For instance, when biking, he always wears a helmet. In this case, he was wearing a helmet.
I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life
Helmet usage in biking, skateboarding, and rollerblading has gone up over the years, and deaths were found more likely to occur without a helmet. Recently, a girl suffered massive traumatic brain injuries after falling from her skateboard in the UK. The girl’s mother, Emma Fairthorne, encouraged all parents to keep an eye on their kids and ensure that they wear a helmet when playing on skateboards, bikes, and scooters. The amount of pain the mother has gone through, spending hours at the hospital and standing by her daughter, who lay in a coma and received multiple brain surgeries.
Though it was a scary incident, Richard Branson’s bike crash did not leave him with life-threatening injuries. He suffered bad damage to his cheek, and cuts to his knee, chin, and shoulder. After being sent back to the United States for X-rays and scans to ensure the damage was minimal, he posted a few pictures of his condition, giving a thumbs up. Undeterred from the incident, he still plans on completing his endurance biking challenge.
