Comic Con 2017, the national convention for fans of comics, superheroes, and science fiction, fantasy, and apocalyptic movies and books is now underway. Comic Con 2017 will be happening in various cities across the country this Fall. But here’s the catch: no two conventions are the same. So which one should you attend? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a rundown of the biggest Comic Con 2017 gatherings still to come:
New York: October 5-8
Comics in the Big Apple, anyone?
New York Comic Con 2017 features a number of fun events happening around the city, and plenty of drool-worthy film stars (like Mark Hamill and Felicity Jones). New York Comic Con will also be hosting the 2017 NYCC Eastern Championships of Cosplay on October 7. The Convention runs October 5-8 2017, at the Javits Center in Manhattan, New York City.
Cinematic guests include Mark Hamill, Felicity Jones (Rogue One), Peter Capaldi, and William Shatner. Two of the Doctor’s companions will be there: Pearl Mackie (Bill) and Karen Gillan (Amy). Kevin Conroy of Batman, Sean Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy, and Pablo Schreiber of American Gods will also be present, along with other movie and TV stars. (Did we mention Mark Hamill?)
Comic book artists include Aaron Kuder (Guardians of the Galaxy), Alex Maleev (Daredevil), Alexis Sentenac (Assassin’s Creed), Amy Chu (Poison Ivy), and Humberto Ramos (The Amazing Spider-Man) plus a heck of a lot more! There will also be a few authors in attendance, such as Max Brooks (World War Z) and Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle).
Additionally, several events will be happening around the city in conjunction with the convention. A Doctor Who Costume and Trivia Contest will occur on October 4 at The Way Station in Brooklyn. A Star Wars Film Concert Series by the New York Philharmonic will take place on October 4-7 at the Lincoln Center, and Epic Rap Battles of History will play October 5 at BB King Blues Club in Times Square.
In other words, this seems like the convention to go to if you’re a Star Wars fan.
Chicago: August 24-27
Get on the ball, because Wizard World Comic Con Chicago 2017 (yeah, it’s a mouthful) is swift approaching. And basically it looks like it’s just going to be a huge Doctor Who reunion party. If David Tennant alone doesn’t convince you to go, how do Alex Kingston (Riversong), John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Catherine Tate (Donna), and Jenna Coleman (Clara) sound? Even if none of that appeals to you, we’re pretty sure you’d like to see Paul Bettany and Billy Boyd (“fool of a Took!”).
Comic book artists are manifold, but include Mike Grell of Green Arrow, Batman, and Warlord; and Jenny Parks of Star Trek Cats. Which we’ve never heard of but it sounds awesome.
There’s a lot of programming lined up, including a presentation by some guys who built a DeLorean Time Machine. (I don’t think it actually works, but hey, you won’t know until you go.)
Chicago Comic Con runs August 24-27 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
This might be the one to attend if you’re into Doctor Who, though sadly, Capaldi won’t be there.
Salt Lake: September 21-19
Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 features a jaw-dropping and surprising range of guests. You can hobnob with Elijah Wood, then go see Dick Van Dyke. After that you may want to check out Catherine Tate and John Barrowman of Doctor Who. Or maybe hit up John and Joan Cusack. Whatever you do, don’t miss seeing Back to the Future‘s Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). Or maybe you’re more into seeing BB-8’s puppeteer. Stephen Amell of Arrow will also be there. But the final shocker is Jodi Benson, of The Little Mermaid fame. (We told you it was surprising.)
Special events include sci-fi speed dating (your guess is as good as mine), a worldbuilders party, and a cosplay contest.
Salt Lake City Comic Con runs September 21-23 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
If you want an assortment of film and TV stars (or if you’re an LOTR fan), this may be the one for you.
Portland: September 8-10
Keeping Portland weird at Rose City Comic Con 2017 will be none other than Weird Al Yankovic himself. The Portland convention will take place in the Oregon Convention Center on September 8-10. Special events include a costume contest and high-school style homecoming dance.
Cinematic guests include Dominic Cooper of Agent Carter, Rose McGiver of iZombie and Power Rangers, Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica, Peter Capaldi, and Felicia Day of Supernatural. Karl Urban of Star Trek and Lord of the Rings (“Dang it, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a Rider of Rohan”), and James and Oliver Phelps (a.k.a. the Weasley Twins) will also be in attendance.
A wide number of comic book artists are scheduled to attend, including Mike Zeck (Captain America, Aquaman, Batman, Legends of the DC Universe, Green Lantern).
This may be the nerdiest convention on our list, so if you’re ready to geek out over a range of actors from Harry Potter, Doctor Who, LOTR, Supernatural, and Battlestar Galactica, this one’s got your name on it.
Other Comic Cons
San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, and Seattle Comic Cons have already wrapped up for 2017.
As a final note, I feel I should point out that Stan Lee will be at Los Angeles Comic Con, which runs October 27-29 at the LA Convention Center.
