Maddeningly, we still don’t know the title to the second film in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trilogy. However, we do know a lot of other stuff. Here’s a round-up of all the available information on the Fantastic Beasts 2 film:
It looks like the sequel will feature the same main characters as the first Fantastic Beasts film. That means, of course, Newt Scamander, as well as sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein. No-Maj Jacob Kowalski will also get dragged into the action again, it seems. And of course Gellert Grindelwald is still around. According to the IMDB page, Ezra Miller will be reprising his role as Credence Barebone. So do with that information what you will.
However, Fantastic Beasts 2 is also set to feature some exciting new characters. (Or should I say “new” characters?)
As you’ve probably heard by now, Albus Dumbledore is one of these “new” characters. At the time of this film (1927), he’s 46 years old.
Another “new” character is Nicolas Flamel. Now this is truly exciting. Of course, we heard about Flamel in the first ever Harry Potter book. But we never saw him! Now we’ll finally get to meet the creator of the Sorcerer’s Stone.
We’ll also get to see Newt’s older brother Theseus Scamander, a powerful wizard and war hero who tends to overshadow his little brother.
Another intriguing detail is Leta Lestrange, who will apparently appear in this movie. You may remember that Newt had a photo of her in the first film, and the two were apparently close at Hogwarts before going their separate ways.
Besides those big names, we’ve got a bunch of characters set to appear in this film that no one has ever heard of before. Some of them have last names that belong to Death Eaters in the Harry Potter books (Travers and Rosier), which is intriguing.
Obviously, Eddie Redmayne and the rest of the gang from the first Fantastic Beasts film will reprise their roles for the sequel.
Probably the most surprising/exciting casting announcement was that of Jude Law as Dumbledore. Mexican actor Brontis Jodorowsky will play Dumbledore’s friend Nicolas Flamel.
Zoe Kravitz (of Divergent and X-Men: First Class) is cast as Leta Lestrange. Callum Turner will play Theseus Scamander (and if I may say so, was VERY well-cast: he bears a family resemblance to Eddie Redmayne).
Other cast members include Claudia Kim (of Age of Ultron),Wolf Roth, Victoria Yeates, Derek Riddell, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Cornell S. John,Tim Ingall, William Nadylam, David Sakurai, Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Donna Preston.
Jessica Williams (of The Daily Show) and Fiona Glascott (of Brooklyn and Resident Evil) have also been added to the cast; but we don’t know yet who they’ll be playing.
Based on an image released on October 5, we know Newt applied for a travel permit and was denied by the Ministry of Magic. The Ministry’s stamp states that Newt was “uncooperative and evasive on reasons for last trip.” Well, since the reason for his last trip was to release a Thunderbird in the U.S… yeah, no wonder he was evasive.
Warner Bros released an official plot synopsis for Fantastic Beasts 2 on July 3:
“JK Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald.
“However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore.
“But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander.
“The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”
We also know there will be a wizarding circus in the film (since Claudia Kim will play a woman who is an attraction at the circus). And Ingvar Sigurdsson will be playing a bounty hunter.
Fantastic Beasts 2 opens in 1927, and takes place primarily in Paris and London (no NYC this time).
However, get a load of this: it looks like some filming happened in Lacock – the tiny English town that the Harry Potter films used for about as many possible things as they could (Harry’s childhood home, Slughorn’s house, Godric’s Hollow, and even Hogwarts). Last summer, someone on Twitter posted a photo of what are apparently movie extras in black robes milling around outside Lacock Abbey.
J.K. Rowling has written the screenplay. David Yates directs. And James Newton Howard will compose the score.
Filming started in July. The film releases November 16, 2018.
