Why pay for expensive cable? These new-generation Digital TV Antennas bring you clear, crisp HDTV. And best of all, every channel is FREE!
Everyone wants to save a few bucks these days. And the new generation of indoor TV antennas deliver better signal quality than ever before. Military electronics and smartphones now use small, efficient antennas that are “wave formed”. That means that their reception characteristics are electronically tuned to pick up even weak signals, and pass them through loud and clear.
That’s the same technology that many of today’s HDTV antennas use. Our expert took a look at some of the new devices on offer and we explain our findings to you now.
TVNowPro is lightweight, easy to mount on the wall, and comes with a cable that is long enough to easily position it for best reception. We tested it in suburban Long Island, and we got clean reception from New York City and New Jersey, which was about 20 miles away. We liked the stylish looks that allowed it to mount unobtrusively on our den wall. My wife didn’t complain, which is a miracle itself! The antenna came very securely packaged and I received it exactly 8 days after I ordered online.
The flat panel TVSurf mounts flat against the wall, and even worked well when hidden behind our 42” OLED TV. Reception was excellent. We encountered no problems hooking it up and we received clear HDTV within minutes. The antenna is somewhat directional, but that is a characteristic of almost all antennas. They must be “aimed” at the signal source. But once we experimented for a few minutes, reception was excellent. Customer service was great. I called them for some advice about placement. They answered on the second ring and the rep accurately explained the issue to me.
We ordered a TVRadius online, and we received it in about a week. It came with clear instructions, and even my technophobe wife was able to disconnect the old cable and connect it to our flat panel TV in less than 10 minutes. I placed the TVRadius on a window facing NYC, where most of our free channels come from. I had a small issue making it stick to the window, but a firm push mounted it securely and soon we were watching local sports and news in crisp HDTV. TVRadius is very competitively priced. When I received SwellHD, the tightly wrapped cable looked like it might be too short. But after uncoiling it, I found it was long enough to mount it on the wall. I had to cycle through “channel finding” on my 42” OLED TV a few times in order to get the optimum number of stations, but once I found the correct position I found that I received 23 stations in HDTV and 14 others stations that were not in HD quality, but were as good as a normal broadcast.
This antenna arrived nicely packaged. There were no instructions about how to position it, but a few minutes of trail and error resulted in finding the best indoor spot to mount it, which was next to the window in our viewing room. I was able to pull in movies, sports, local news and even the food channel that I enjoy watching. The food channel was the main reason I paid for cable, and I love getting it for free and not having to pay for it. My wife connected this while I was out, and she called customer service to figure out where to plug it in on the TV. She said that they explained it perfectly. I’m glad the this product is supported so well.
The ads say that TVBuddy was developed using military technology, and this was apparent to me in the number of stations that I was able to receive. A couple of the channels were a little weak and grainy and tended to cut out, but that’s because it picked up so many channels. I even was able to see some programming from far away New Jersey. As with all of these antennas, hookup was a breeze, I just mounted it on the wall and connected the cable to my TV. (I ordered three….one for each TV in our house. I got a really good price)
Any indoor antenna that you buy can pick up a number of channels based on the distance from the broadcast antenna.
But what if you live in a rural area, or very far from any broadcast towers?
Or what you live in an urban area, but you want more than the many channels you can receive already.
The solution is an “antenna amplifier”. Simply put, this small device acts like an “audio amplifier”, but for broadcast signals. It “makes the channels louder”. It boosts the signal you receive and you can usually get up 10 more channels right away. Even if you cannot get that many more channels, it will make the channels you do receive more stable and possibly clearer.
That’s why we recommend you buy the approved matching amplifier for the antenna you buy, They are very simple to use, just attach between the antenna and the TV and BOOM! You’re getting a stronger signal!
