For a lot of people, money is tight. I have certainly been there. One solution to your money problems could be starting a budget. Perhaps you’ve been budgeting for a while but you aren’t seeing the results you think you should. Here are some reasons why your budget isn’t working.
- You miss an important item in your budget. You may have put some money into savings but you forgot to budget the oil for your house. So now you have to take from your savings and your budget was blown. Make sure you consider all of your expenses for the month in your budget.
- Being influenced by others. You might keep seeing the same commercial for a new phone on television. You then feel like you should upgrade. Well, if there is nothing wrong with your current phone, you should probably hold off and save the money instead. You might also have a friend that always wants to go out and sometimes you need to tell them no if you can’t afford it.
- You don’t have entertainment or treats in your budget. There are times where you will want to go out to eat or maybe go to a fair. You need to allow some room to do fun things if you can. You might not go out to eat and save in advance. For this, you will need to weigh your options and decide what is really important for you or your family.
- Do you have a major expense that is eating up your budget? It could be rent or a car payment or your mortgage. You might have to consider your options of moving or making more income. You could look into the gig economy for side hustles to try to bring in more cash.
- No discipline. Some people don’t stick to the goals they set. You will have to be honest with yourself if this is what is happening. If you really want something, start saving for it instead of putting it on a credit card or taking money out of your emergency fund.
There are many reasons why a budget may not work and this is not an exhaustive list. You may have to really learn how to change your ways to get to financial freedom. There are ways to pay off debt and save money. You just have to stick to your plan.
