There is definitely money to be made online from freelance writing. It is a lot of work but it can be a way to achieve financial freedom. You might have decided to do this but aren’t sure what pitfalls to avoid. Here are some mistakes to avoid as a freelance writer.
- Taking any work that you can get. You shouldn’t start on content mill websites but that is how most of us have started. Then of course there are bidding sites. The best way to land clients is cold emailing. In this way you can establish a better rate for yourself and you aren’t bidding your way to the bottom. It’s okay to take some work under your desired pay if you like the work and you need money, but strive to make what you are worth, and pitch everyday.
- Not asking the right questions. Ask about things like, do you want me to post this on WordPress? Do you want this closer to 500 or 1,000 words? Would you like me to pitch my own ideas? These a just a few, but make sure you get down to what your client actually wants. Don’t waste each other’s time.
- Not knowing how to market your business. Set up social media profiles, include in your bio that you are for hire. Include links to your website (yes, you need one.
- Being afraid to start. You might be researching a lot and that is great, but at some point you have to just get out there and do it. All that research will be for nothing if you never start writing.
Becoming a freelance writer was one of the best decisions I ever made. You can make money doing what you love and be able to work your own hours. If you suffer from chronic illness (like me) you can get things done when you feel well enough to do so. There are some mistakes to avoid as a freelance writer but if you get out there and try your best, you’ll eventually get where you want to be.
