Anyone looking for a job of any kind should have a resume. It’s important to make sure your resume is as perfect as possible to stand out from the crowd. You want to make sure that the hiring manager will actually read what you are submitting and you won’t get tossed aside. Here are some common resume mistakes.
- Length. Your resume should be one page. Managers receive tons of resumes and they probably won’t look at the second page.
- Misspellings or grammatical errors. Ask a friend or family member to give your resume a second set of eyes. You may not catch something and that can ruin your chances at getting your dream job.
- Including irrelevant job history. If you are a college graduate, they may not care about the coffee job you had at 16. Look at the job description to determine if you should list certain jobs.
- Having an ugly resume. Your resume should be visually appealing within reason. Think graphic design vs. law office.
- Not using key words. Your resume probably goes through a tracking system before anyone’s eyes see it. Use words included in job description.
- Not including side hustles. You’d want to include your blog or any freelance writing, as an example.
- Including hobbies. This depends on the job but some hiring managers really don’t care what you do in your free time unless it relates to the job in question.
- Being humble. Don’t be humble on your resume, you are selling yourself.
You definitely want to look at your resume and see what you can change on it before applying to your dream job. You need to cater to the employer and show them what skills you have that they are looking for. Like mentioned above, you will go through a tracking system first, but you need to have the right skills listed to land an interview. You want a resume that will get you in the door.
