Why Should Water Come Before Coffee?
You probably know that, as soon as you start feeling thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. It may not be serious dehydration that lands you in the hospital. But, it’s still your body’s way of saying, “Hey! I need some water!”. That’s the reason you experience thirst.
When you wake up, you probably feel that thirsty, cotton-mouth feeling. Yet you go right for the coffee pot. Bad idea.
Coffee is a diuretic, meaning that it causes your body to excrete more urine than usual. What happens when you pee? You lose more water! That’s why you usually have to pee more frequently as you drink your morning coffee.
When you first wake up, your body is already somewhat dehydrated from having no water all night. It’s basically begging you for some before you do anything else. If you grab coffee before water, you’re depriving your body of what it needs and losing even more water.
Grabbing water first can quench your thirst and bring your hydration to healthy level. You might even control your coffee intake better because you won’t feel as thirsty. And, if you ever experience an upset stomach from drinking coffee, you may curb that symptom. Drinking water first will keep you from drinking coffee on an empty stomach, which can irritate the lining of your stomach.
