The new year brings new ads for clothing stores all over the world. Hennes and Mauritz (H&M) should have thought a little harder before publishing their latest ad. Not only is it in poor taste, it is offensive and people wasted no time in letting them know how they felt. The clothing store thought it was a good idea to have a young, black child model pose wearing a sweatshirt with the caption “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle” on it.
Wow! Just wow!
We would like to know who is in charge of Hennes and Mauritz’s advertising campaign. This is definitely an epic fail. In the year 2018, we find it hard to believe that a company could be so insensitive and not exhibit cultural awareness. There is just no excuse for this type of advertising and there is no place for it anywhere.
Yes, it’s true that with the election of Donald Trump as president there has been an outpouring of racists coming forward to express their thoughts on the makeup of the country. But in this day and age, we need to take a stand and let people know this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
Many people believe it was just carelessness on the behalf of the company, others are not buying it. Sure, they claim it was a simple error. But to the people of color in the world, it is a slap in the face. An intentional one. Social media has exploded. The other kids in the ad are wearing shirts that say “Survival Expert” and “Junior Tour Guide,” so what’s up with the “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle” shirt on the young, black model?
Mistake or not, Hennes and Mauritz (H&M) will surely face some serious sales backlash as the result of this insensitive error.
